Protecting the rural environment

Safeguards are to be introduced that will protect uncultivated land and semi-natural areas from environmental damage caused by their conversion to intensive agriculture. From 1 February 2002 the Environmental Impact Assessment (Uncultivated Land and Semi-Natural Areas) (England) Regulations 2001 will require environmental assessment for all projects to bring new land into intensive farming.
