The European Parliament's temporary committee on the outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease held its first meeting on 21 February in Brussels. Its tasks will be to assess EU policy and controls on meat imports from third countries; analyse the management of the epidemic; assess the cost to the EU budget; make proposals on combating animal diseases in the agricultural sector and look into vaccination policy. The committee will invite government and European Commission representatives and officials to attend its hearings before making its final report and recommendations. The committee's mandate runs for twelve months.
