Looks at who is responsible for cleaning up contaminated land. The Contaminated Land Regulations 1999 came into force in April 2000, and property professionals are advised to familiarise themselves with their workings and intricacies or face heavy fines. Particularly, they should be aware that although only the most seriously contaminated sites will be caught, it is vital that the potential for contamination is adequately assessed, or it will be impossible to make an accurate judgment of whether the new law applies to a particular site.
