Points out that the SCL protocol on extensions of time, although not a contractual obligation, can keep a contract running on time, and without dispute, if used correctly. It produces model clauses to reflect actual progress and realistic forecasts of future events, which can make a major contribution to the smooth running of a project. It recommends that when contractors make applications for extensions of time, they should submit a sub-network for insertion into the updated programme, showing the expected effect of any delaying event that might entitle them to an extension. Submits that the protocol should be treated as a guide for a contract administrator, but not as being irrefutable. The protocol can be downloaded for free from www.eotprotocol.com.
