Gloucester City Council and local farmers have disagreed over plans to demolish flood barriers on the banks of the River Severn. Proposals are part of a council response to draft flood management plans being drawn up by the Environment Agency. New water meadows created would be expected to soak up excess rainwater and reduce threat to local housing. However, farmers would have to cease arable farming in the areas affected. Council and Environment Agency are considering the proposals.
