Special report: house prices - 2002 - Economist 30 March 2002, 77-79(2) .

The "Economist" is launching a set of global house price indices covering 13 developed economies: Ireland, Spain, Italy, Australia, Britain, United States, Belgium, Canada, Japan, Sweden, France, Netherlands and Germany. The indices will cover house price data going back to 1980, on an average nationwide basis and in major cities. Examines market trends in the different countries over the past two decades with tables and graphs showing real house prices, average price of a two-bedroomed flat, ratio of house prices to income, % of households owning their home, and the "Economist" house price indices. Concludes that the new index will help map the economically important balance between debt, prices and inflation.
