Argues that brick's versatility and durability makes it an ideal building material in terms of sustainable development. Looks at the different characteristics of clay bricks in terms of contributing to the environmental performance of a building. While brick as a material cannot significantly influence the overall thermal efficiency of a wall, cost savings can be made by addressing the problem of thicker walls by reducing the thickness of the outer leaf. In addition, clay brick scores well in terms of sound-insulation and storing heat. Discusses the use of brick slips which have the same appearance of bricksbut have several advantages in terms of sustainability: they use lower volumes of clay; more slips can be transported per lorry load; and they are better suited to prefabricate panels. With two brief case studies.
