Examines whether an alternative approach to regional identity must be undertaken for benefit of landscape environment and people. Two concepts of regional identity are highlighted, romantic-modernist; and view of place as expression of social, economic and natural processes. Recommends adoption of sustainable development to create new regional identities to reflect positive, creative and pragmatic response to place.
