Figures show number of possession orders granted by the courts for social landlords increased 8.8% on the first quarter of 2001. Lord Falconer had recently argued that government was not on an 'eviction cruscade' stressing that the action was only used as a last resort. The Chartered Institute of Housing argued that pressure from the Housing Corporation to improve rent collection could have had an effect, but the National Housing Federation stressed that the proportion of tenants evicted remained very small.
