Report on a conference by the CLA and COSIRA on the conversion of redundant farm buildings to non-agricultural purposes. Braintree District Council reported that it had allowed thirty such conversions without causing problems. It was felt that such conversions would have little significant effect on rural employment but would secure local benefits in job creation and "spin off" effects. The need for market research before conversion to housing or workshop was emphasised. Figures on costs of conversion and income from different non-agricultural uses were given. Usually conversion to housing paid best.
