Calls for debate into the usage of green belt land after planners have called for it to be developed to ease the housing shortage. Briefly reviews the historical development of the green belt and argues the regulations governing its use should be treated no differently to any other planning policy and kept under review whilst retaining the original principle of protection. The extent of the green belt could also be examined from a regional perspective with exact boundaries being defined.
