When the rains drain mainly to the plain... - 2002 - Civil Engineering Surveyor July/August 2002, 24-25(2) .

Discusses the problem urbanisation on flood plains and flooding. Urbanisation encourages flooding by increasing the amount of run-off into the river systems and occupying land that would otherwise be available for natural flood water storage. Looks at what can be done to minimise flooding, especially in urban areas from three perspectives: development siting and planning; sustainable drainage systems (SDS), to minimise volumes and rates of run-off arriving in rivers; river engineering, to maximise the efficient removal of run-off to the sea.
