Discusses the issue of housing density following John Prescott's recent housing statement to the House of Commons. Prescott has signalled that he would be calling in planning applications for schemes below the threshold of 30 dwellings per hectare. Argues the case for higher densities needs to be made in subtle ways and not just in numerical terms but local conditions also need to be taken account of and communities consulted.
