The human deterrent

Connolly, P

The human deterrent - 2002 - Regeneration and Renewal 4 October 2002, 16-17(2) .

Discusses crime prevention tools in town centres and argues that CCTV cameras are less effective than originally thought. Suggests that designing town centres that enable the self-policing effect of the public is the answer to improving community safety. Highlights a number of design measures to achieve crime reduction such as terraced housing, wide pavements, open pedestrian space and street lighting. In contrast, transport interchanges and cash machines next to bus stops and fast food outlets are thought to attract criminals.
