Proper use of appraisal tool - 2002 - Planning (for the Natural and Built Environment) (1494) 25 October 2002, 21(1) .

Looks at the advantages and application of sustainability appraisals which are set to form a key part of government's plans to reform the local planning system. In a sustainability appraisal, the performance of a strategy, policy or project is assessed against sustainable development objectives. At present, sustainability appraisals are only formally required for small parts of the planning system such as regional planning guidance, although they have been undertaken for several major development schemes. Outlines the process of carrying out a sustainability appraisal and the advantages which include providing a social, economic and environmental context for planning decisions and policy formation. Also looks at European Directive 2001/42/EC which will require development plans and local development frameworks to face regular environmental assessment.
