New research from the Countryside Agency reveals that a fifth of people living in rural areas suffer from poverty, with young people among the worst affected. "Indicators of poverty and social exclusion in rural England 2002" highlights a number of factors that make life hard for rural people such as unemployment, low income and poor housing and local amenities.
