Waste review recommendation for £35/t landfill tax rate

Chancellor's pre-budget statement contains plans to phase in a landfill tax of £35 per tonne in the medium to long term by tripling the current annual increase landfill tax escalator to £3 per tonne from 2005-06. The move is in line with one of the main recommendations of the waste strategy review that warned that without urgent action England's municipal waste would double in volume by 2020. The strategy review identified three key action areas including reduction, more recycling and boosting household responsibility.
