The waste management industry is preparing for new challenges in controlling landfill gas hazards as sites fall under the new pollution prevention and control (PPC) regime. Alongside measures to reduce methane emissions, operators will now have to confront long neglected issues linked to trace landfill gas compounds and combustion by-products. New requirements to monitor and control emissions from flares and power plants are set to increase operating costs - and some upgrading of existing systems is also likely. The process, while adding to public awareness of air quality issues around landfills, should also deliver reassurance that regulators are responding to recent research into possible health impacts.
