After summarising the problems presented by contaminated land, the author examines the importance of site investigation, and its role in finding the right solution to contaminated areas. The different phases of restoration are discussed, including the control of water movement and gas, before the provision for vegetation growth is considered. Restoration must have due regard to the proposed after-uses for the site. (Journal Abstract).
