Examines new directions in UK planning proposed for 2004 noting this is a chance to look at integrated spatial strategies. Under the new schema regional planning guidance (RPG) will be replaced by a single-tier system called regional spatial strategies (RSSs) prepared by regional bodies which will be enforced to contribute to sustainable development. RSSs will in future incorporate transport strategies. Spatial strategies owe much to the EU work on the European Development Perspective.
