Digitally enhancing business in Britain's towns and cities

Hawkins, D.

Digitally enhancing business in Britain's towns and cities - 2003 - New Urban Futures (8) 6 February 2003, 6(1) .

Looks at government measures to promote broadband technology to UK businesses which include a new broadband task force and pushing forward broadband at a local level. Broadband technology can improve companies' productivity and help deliver economic regeneration, but figures from the Office of Telecommunications for January 2003 reveal that only 18% of private firms are wired up. Questions the commitment of some urban local authorities to deliver broadband and suggests that more effort is needed to prevent a 'digital divide'. Concludes by outlining barriers to broadband access such as additional costs under an amendment to the Transport Act 2001.
