Reports on the DoE Committee of Inquiry chaired by Lord Chorley , Handling geographical information , which proposes that such information should be packaged in standard spatial units and uniquely referenced in a similar system to the book ISBN. It also highlights four key tasks, the rapid conversion of the Ordnance Survey basic map series to a digital form; more widespread use of postcodes and National Grid References as standard units and setting up a Centre for Geographical Information.
