Discusses two approaches which have been taken by the courts when considering purchasers' damages for negligent surveys. The 'difference in value' approach based on the difference between the price paid in reliance upon the report and true value as illustrated in "Watts v Morrow" (CA [1991] CILL 687) is open to dispute and a degree of ambiguity. "Mckinnon v E Survey" (ChD Abs66390) takes the 'true value' approach assessing the value of the property in its defective state with the benefit of hindsight.
