A "Mainly for students" article that looks at credit unions, which form part of a distinctive mutual sector in UK financial services. Although there are only 650 credit unions registered in the UK (in 2000), worldwide there are around 30 000 in over 80 countries serving in excess of 100m people. Describes the key operating principles of credit unions comparing them with other types of financial institutions. Credit unions offering low-cost financial services to local people will become more prominent. Since July 2002 new credit unions come under Financial Services Authority regulation and government supports them as a tool to tackle financial exclusion.
