Civilising city centres?
Roberts, M.
Civilising city centres? - 2003 - Town & Country Planning 72(2) March/April 2003, 78-79(2) .
Discusses a recent study by the Institute of Alcohol Studies into the management of the public realm and the perceived benefits of extended licensing hours in London, Dublin, Copenhagen and Berlin. The study found that all four mixed use areas experienced conflicts between entertainment and other uses and that a relaxation of licensing hours alone could not change an established drinking culture. However, in Copenhagen a clear set of local licensing regulations and accompanying planning controls have helped to establish a cafe culture.
