Rain or shine, satellite monitors European farms - 2003 - Geo Informatics (6) March 2003, 10-12(3) .

For many years Earth-observation (EO) satellite technology has been used to classify and monitor crops. The EU utilizes this technology extensively to control some components of its agricultural subsidy program, the European Agriculture Guidance and Guarantee Fund (EAGGF). EAGGF is part of the EU's Common Agricultural Policy. Article examines the application of synthetic aperture radar (SAR) satellite imaging, highlighting the benefits of SAR satellites such as RADARSAT-1 over other EO satellites. Advantages include guaranteed data acquisition and enhanced crop identification. Also looks at the value of SAR images during the foot-and-mouth epidemic and the role of SAR in the future of the EAGGF. [Partly taken from journal abstract].
