Examines the need to specify what is the special architectural or historic interest of a designated conservation area now that such areas are increasing and a major land use policy decision. With reference to the criteria set out in NPPG18 "Planning and the historic environment" and guidance by Englilsh Heritage and the RTPI, the author examines the City of Edinburgh Council's review of the city's 38 diverse conservation areas. Sets out the council's purpose in carrying out such a review and the format used to assess the character of each area.
