The government has announced a £7bn improvements package to alleviate traffic conditions on some of Britain's most congested roads. The package includes motorway and trunk road widening and increased traffic management measures. A feasibility study into the practicalities of a road user charging scheme will also be undertaken. A discussion paper "Managing our roads" has been published at the same time, which sets out the challenges to be faced over the next 20 to 30 years in balancing the needs of the road transport system and its environmental impact.
