New targets to protect and improve biodiversity on the Government Estate, which accounts for over 1% of the UK's total land mass, have been published as part of the Framework for Sustainable Development on the Government Estate. The targets cover government-owned Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSIs), require relevant government departments to produce Biodiversity Action Plans and set a biodiversity target in contracts for new and refurbished government buildings.
