US home construction reached its highest level in 17 years according to the US Commerce Department. New housing starts climbed to 1.87m in July, up 1.5% from the previous month with single-family housing starts up 1.9% up on June at 1.52m, the highest since 1978 and the third highest figure on record. The National Association of Realtors' statistics show that existing condominium and co-operative sales set a record in the second quarter 2003.
