Recent fires in Hong Kong and other cities in China show that greater attention should be paid to fire safety issues. In Hong Kong, a large number of pre-1980 high-rise buildings were designed according to superseded building and fire codes which may be considered substandard. Argues that current fire codes do not provide a holistic picture of fire safety in these buildings. Suggests a systematic approach to the fire safety ranking for multi-storey buildings.
