Farmers must take stricter measures to reduce nitrate leaching in order to protect groundwaters, concludes a study by the Environment Agency. Government is required by the 1991 EC Directive on nitrate from farming to improve measures to curb nitrate leaching in areas designated as nitrate vulnerable zones (NVZs). Going beyond these measures will be unpopular with the farming industry.
