Research challenges flood level assumptions

Research challenges flood level assumptions - 2003 - New Civil Engineer (1499) 11 September 2003, 8-9(1) .

Research by Mott MacDonald has revealed that flood defences in the UK may be significantly underdesigned. Flood levels could rise 0.5m higher than anticipated as assumptions about the characteristics of river channels are oversimplified and underestimate severe floodwater levels such as the 100 year scenario. Meanwhile Norwich Union has developed a 3D map in association with mapping company Nexmap to help assess properties in flood plains on an individual basis, rather than by postcode; thus potentially reducing flood insurance for certain properties.
