Miller, M.

Back to the future - the Garden City centenary - 2003 - Town & Country Planning 72(7) August 2003, 200-203(4) .

Provides a centenary history of Letchworth Garden City, which remains today a paradigm of community planning. Describes Letchworth's development from Ebenezer Howard's vision and the master layout plan prepared by Barry Parker and Raymond Unwin, to the 13.6 mile Garden City Greenway opened in May 2003. Notes some of the keys to Letchworth's enduring success such as the benefit of retaining the land value increment in trust for the community and the concept of a city as being a self-sufficient and social entity. Concludes that Letchworth still has much to offer to those who will be developing the new settlements as envisaged by the Community Plan. References
