New sheriff in town for stamp duty cowboys

Craig Lester the head of stamp taxes at the Inland Revenue warns of a tougher regime for stamp tax avoiders. The Revenue's powers to enquire into any transaction would be extended to stamp tax from 1 December when the regime is replaced by a stamp duty tax. A commercial transaction unit being set up in the Manchester tax office will investigate around 5% of the deals each year.
