In on the act
Dickinson, J.
In on the act - 2003 - RICS Business October 2003, 17-18(2) .
Discusses why it makes sound business sense for surveyors to take notice of the Disability Discrimination Act 1995 (DDA) and to take advantage of the opportunities to advise clients on their DDA responsibilities, such as what reasonable adjustments to the physical environment they should make. Outlines the full remit of the DDA in respect of employers' (public service providers) obligations, noting that all exemptions to these duties will cease by October 2004. Highlights the fact that it is the service provider not the building that has to comply with the DDA and that surveyors should understand the whole Act, not just the building aspects. Recommends that service providers develop a strategic approach to meet their DDA obligations, undertaking a full organisation audit. Indicates that proven DDA expertise is now becoming a pre-requisite prior to appointment for some commissions.
