With some experts predicting a severe decline or at least a slowdown in the housing market over the next few years, the article examines the key elements of the safety net available to protect mortgage borrowers. Looks from this perspective at state help, mortgage protection insurance, debt and savings, house prices, mortgage rates, inflation, the labour market, the law, lender attitudes and vulnerable groups. Concludes that borrowers look better placed now to withstand the effects of a housing market crash than in 1989.
