A large coalition of different organisations and individuals is demanding a reform of VAT on the repair and refurbishment of housing and new buildings. This includes more than 150 000 construction and property professionals and insists that Gordon Brown supports a 5% rate on repairs and improvements on housing and historic buildings. The chancellor is under pressure to reform the so-called brownfield tax ahead of a crucial European Union meeting on Tuesday where finance ministers will consider allowing tax cuts on repair and refurbishment of housing.
