Hazardous waste: seeking solutions in a fog of uncertainty

Hazardous waste: seeking solutions in a fog of uncertainty - 2003 - ENDS Report (345) October 2003, 18-21(4) .

Discusses events surrounding the change in the law regarding the 'co-disposal' of hazardous waste in landfills containing biodegradable waste. Examines the problems already experienced in complying with the EU landfill directive (Directive 99/31/EC) and the perceived shortfall in capacity and waste management crisis. Aluminium producers and lead battery recyclers are vulnerable and concern is voiced over air pollution control. The biggest problem is the effect on brownfield redevelopment and the disposal or treatment of contaminated soil.
