Provides an overview of the economies, housing and mortgage markets in England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. Examines demographics and tenure profiles, economic context, house prices, affordability, lending volumes and values, mortgage characteristics and possessions. Concludes that the UK as whole has experienced a protracted period of buoyancy in the housing and mortgage markets with marked countrywide differences. Notes that lending in the first half of 2003 was 25% higher than the corresponding period in 2002, that affordability constraints are picking up across the countries, first-time buyers' numbers are falling nationwide, current low interest rates are ensuring that mortgage payments as a proportion of income remains relatively low and possessions have fallen across all four countries.
