Examines the concepts of slow cities and smart growth and assesses how applicable they are to development and regeneration in the United Kingdom. Suggests that Ludlow, a market town with a population of approximately 10 000 is the first urban area in the UK to embrace some elements of slow city thinking. Examples of smart growth can be found in the Thames Gateway expansion proposals and in"A new vision for York", a recent report commissioned by the Joseph Rowntree Foundation available at www.jrf.org.uk.
