Reports on the up-to-date situation regarding self-build certificates. Points out that the existing building certificate is out-of-date but still useful. A new version is being prepared by the RICS Building Certificate of Domestic Structures Working Party, for production in summer 2004. The certificate can be used to assure mortgage lenders that a new or recently built property is of a satisfactory structural standard. The working party aims to get the new certificate approved by the Council of Mortgage Lenders.
