Looks at how the implementation of the EU landfill directive (Directive 99/31/EC), which comes into force in July 2004, will drastically reduce the number of landfill sites for disposing of hazardous waste. Uses an example in Ireland to illustrate how contaminated land can be managed. Table highlights the specific areas which require risk management and suggests a risk register could now be used as a means of trying to assess and quantify the risks.
