The shadow of Hatfield
Hill, C.
The shadow of Hatfield - 2004 - Building 269(8341) 16 July 2004, 52-53(2) .
Reports on the greater willingness on the part of the authorities to investigate and prosecute organisations for manslaughter. This is shown in the charging of Railtrack, Balfour Beatty and six individuals with corporate manslaughter for the Hatfield rail disaster and in a 10 minute rule bill put forward in parliament on corporate killing. For the construction sector many firms believe they are already dealing with the issue of health and safety adequately. The Home Office stated that any new legislation in this area will be nothing more than compliance with existing health and safety legislation but there might be more time and effort needed in maintaining audit trails of the safe working practices. Argues for more change in personal rather than corporate responsibility which is arguably a more effective way to ensure better safety standards.
