Contrasts the huge turnovers of the leading companies with the situation 10 years ago when the industry was emerging from recession and the largest companies were less efficient than those of today. There are improved margins today,aggregate pre-tax margins were 6.2% in 2003 compared with 2.9% in 1995. Recently the more benign economy has helped many housebuilders and has added stability to what was a difficult environment for many contractors in the 1990s.
