Evaluates the recently published consultation paper announcing the extension of the government HomeBuy initiative that seeks to assist up to 100 000 key workers, social tenants and other first-time buyers into home-ownership. The scheme consisting of new build HomeBuy, open market HomeBuy and social Homebuy is due to be introduced in April 2006. Reaction to the plan has been generally positive but four areas have been questioned: the diversion of investment from the rented programme; its impact on housing association finance; how private finance for equity shares will work in practice; and the fate of tenants unable still to afford any of the HomeBuy options.
