Provides a status report on the swift uptake of the Business Improvement District (BID) concept in the UK, with businesses voting in favour of 10 such schemes so far. BIDs have been a possibility since the Local Government Act 2003 introduced powers to create them. Reviews how BIDs work and are funded and outlines their benefits for businesses. The BID concept recognises that the public realm is a trading ground and the trading ground is the public realm. Presents a spectrum of industry comments on BIDs, which mostly see them as a valuable tool for upgrading town and centre settings. Table covers BID votes to date.
