Opening Pandora's box - the method of measurement for Highway Works (MMHW): Part 12 - designed to innovate? - 2005 - Civil Engineering Surveyor June 2005, 30-32(3) .

Looks at the implications of Specification of Highway Works cl106 'design of permanent works by the contractor' and its impact on measurement and the preparation of bills of quantities for structures and structural elements. Describes how recent practice means a specifier no longer stipulates a specific proprietary material, but leaves the choice and design to the contractor. This can result in confusion in the contract. The introduction of "Standard SD 4/92 procedures for the adoption of proprietary structures" meant that brand items could be incorporated into the design where needed. However, this approach has proved to be too open. Concludes this problem might be solved by the inclusion of the words 'or equivalent' when a brand name is used.
