Reports on Derwenthorpe, the Joseph Rowntree Foundation's 21st century vision of the garden village suburb, where it, and its housing association, Joseph Rowntree Housing Trust are developing a 540-home urban extension on the fringes of York. The project has been hailed as a model for the future of affordable housing that even commercial developers will be able to emulate. It has however caused local controversy mainly because it is to be built on greenfield land - although that land was first earmarked for housing in the 1980s. Derwenthorpe is masterplanned by PRP Architects and includes 20 acres of green space, lifetime homes, home zones and an affordable housing component of up to 40%. Appended are architect Nigel Ingram's tips on how to get a project like Derwenthorpe moving and Lord Best's ambitions for it.
