Examines in detail the workings of the Freedom of Information Act 2000 (FOIA) which came fully into force on 1 January 2005. Subject to numerous exemptions FOIA imposes a legal duty on public authorities to provide information to members of the public and gives the public a legal right to obtain it. Provides the FOIA definition of a public authority and describes how FOIA operates and is overseen by the information commissioner.
